Prompt: What are a few things that concern you about study abroad or “global engagement” more generally? What tools do you have to succeed in light of those concerns, and how will you use them?
I think of myself as a reasonably nonchalant and personable person. I’ve studied away from family before without problems. I was healthy, made new friends, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The most difficult thing for me is forcing myself to use the language of the country I was studying in. It took me a week or so to become fully comfortable. Even when I knew that my host family, and the people of Berlin wouldn’t judge me for rough German. Even in Paris, where I understood that the people would experience physical pain from my French regardless of how good/bad it was, I had to force myself to use French. Mind you, French is polite for whatever was coming out of my mouth.
The hardest part for me will be coming back to Norman. But, I’ll be happy to see everyone back home. So it will be ok.
