Prompt: How did you react to the perspectives on the United States that you encountered this week? What stood out the most to you? Why? How will that influence your thoughts or actions in the future – either here or abroad?
There are stereotypes for just about everything that exists. Whether these be cultural, sexual, gender, religious, or individual stereotypes, they are infelicitous at all times. Regardless of the “truth” behind the stereotypes, it is paramount to avoid them, and to focus on the person/persons being “analised.” The most salient thing that I read last week was an article written by an Irish man. In the article, he provides a list of stereotypes about people from the United States. While these may all hold some truth, (or maybe not) I find that this list was created in bad taste. First of all, why spend the time on writing about something that irks you so much? And second of all, these are stereotypes for a reason. I.E. — they don’t apply to everyone. It is hard to find a single thing that encompasses 300+ million people. I don’t think that I will have to alter my actions in the future. I’ve heard that I “already act more European than American…” So ist es. I will try to alter my thoughts. Even with me being as adamant as I am about avoiding stereotypes, I sometimes slip up. Life is a learning experience, and I will continue to try and improve myself in some way every day.
