Prompt: How do you hope to incorporate your experiences as a Global Engagement Fellow into your future career? How much of an impact do you think it will make? What will you do to maximize its impact?
I know that my experiences as a member of the Global Engagement Fellows will make a huge impact in my future career. I am majoring in International Security Studies, and I know that every bit of exposure to the international community helps me to understand how things work outside the United States.
Thanks to the Global Engagement program, I will be able to have a handful of study abroad experiences! This coming summer, (2017) I will be interning in London! (At Parliament/another political organisation) Then, a month after I return from two months in London, I will be departing to Heidelberg, Germany for a year! (Probably followed by a summer program/traveling after the academic year is over.)
In order to maximise the impact of these times abroad, I need to do a few things! First, I need to become immersed in the culture of wherever I am studying. Understanding how everything works in the country will help me see their side of an argument better during political discussions. Second, I will learn the language of the place I am studying in. (As much as I can learn over the time. England doesn’t count of course.) Knowing the language of whatever country I am in is a major advantage/perk. Lastly, I will attempt to find a way to talk to people who could help me understand the security policies of the country. This could be difficult, but I believe that is of the utmost importance.
