International Event #2
A second international event that I attended was actually one that I helped to set up. The Großer Stammtisch is one of the German Club’s largest events and usually gets a turnout of 40+ people.
This year was a bit different than other years, as we decided to move the location. Typically, we host the event at the German restaurant, Das Boot, but this year, we moved it to the gastropub, Blackbird. Getting the reservation set up was actually a lot harder than I anticipated. However, after three phone calls and one missed call, the reservation was set up.
The event itself is just a large get together where we all have food and talk. Apart from setting the event up, this year was also different for another reason; I had a few people coming along with me. My friends Lukas, from Germany, and Emma, from the Netherlands, went with me. It was really exciting to have them come along, as it was clear that something like Stammtisch made them feel at home. (Emma studied in Bamberg, Germany with the Erasmus Program, and speaks perfect German.)
In addition to having fun talking with Lukas and Emma, I had fun meeting a few new people. A lot of freshman students in the first semester of German come to this event, and it great to be able to talk to them about German, Germany, and OU. This is also a great time to let everyone know that they can participate in German Club without being an officer. (Apparently a lot of people think that you have to be an officer to be involved.) I hope that everyone who attended had fun, and I hope to see all of the new faces at future events!
